HIV / AIDS in Guetamala

In Guatemala, the AIDS epidemic began in 1984 with the first case of HIV / AIDS reported. Currently over 70,000 people in the country are HIV positive and only 50 receive the necessary treatment due to poverty in the country and the difficulties of access to health services.

2002 Barcelona AIDS Foundation, the project began ten UALE health in America in March 2005 in the Department of Escuintla, one of the areas most affected by the epidemic. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, we have three clinics rehabilitated and equipped, and their associated laboratories, engaged the medical staff and social workers and carry out educational activities, prevention and treatment, including HIV testing with counseling, treatment sexually transmitted infections and support and referral of patients infected by HIV and in need of antiretrovirals. Over 700 patients visit clinics regularly. There have been over 7,000 medical consultations and more than 1,000 HIV tests. There have been over 2,000 educational talks to patients treated and other groups and distributed over 200,000 condoms.

AMD and Eye Care
